CURRENT RESEARCH IN EPIDEMIOLOGY OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES:

Current Research:

Research Work in progress:

Epidemiological survey, molecular studies and correlations of impact of Helicobacter infections on development of gastritis and gastric carcinoma among Nigerian population:

This project intends to conduct an epidemiological survey on the impact of Helicobacter infections in children as a predisposing factor to gastric carcinoma later in life. This is to be achieved by screening asymptomatic children using stool Enzyme Immunoassay technique (EIA) for Helicobacter infection, isolate, identify and perform antibiotics susceptibility testing by culture technique using the noninvasive sample specifically stool. This is with the intention to circumvent the bottlenecks experienced with the invasive samples such as cost, fear of endoscopes, and non-availability of pediatrics’ endoscopes. One of the expected outcomes is that the use of stool will assist in the early detection of this class1 carcinogen organism.

Epidemiology of latent TB infections among asymptomatic population in Nigeria:

This study is aimed at exploring the diagnostic ability of blood and skin method of LTBI diagnosis in a resource poor setting, where IGRA is not affordable, determining the possible prevalence and factors associated with latent tuberculosis infection in Nigeria using rapid, ELISA blood testing and the TST methods and establishment of the awareness and prevention of LTBI among Nigerian populace

Other Research Work in progress:

  • Ethics review of Institutional review boards in resource poor settings.
  • Emergency response survey to outbreak of epidemics and disasters that may lead to challenging public health problems in Nigeria.
  • Molecular studies on extended spectrum beta lactamases organisms in humans and livestock in   Lagos, Nigeria
  • Studies on the diagnosis and management of latent tuberculosis in affected Nigerian population especially children of infected individuals
  • Evaluation of the impact of ethics training on the performance and operational capacities of ethics review committees in Nigeria
  • Studies on Efflux Pump Activities among microorganisms and evaluation of different Efflux Pump Inhibitor substances
